While the internet has taken job search in a whole new direction, there is no change in what is appropriate dress for an interview. Even though more and more companies have gone to a business casual or casual work environment, managers still prefer to see job seekers dressed in a professional manner. What is appropriate to wear for a job interview? That obviously depends on a man or woman.
Men should still focus on wearing a suit with a shirt and tie to an interview. For men without a suit, you can often get away with dress pants and a shirt and tie. You should make sure your suit or pants are a classic and conservative color such as Navy Blue, Grey or Black. You also don’t want to go crazy on the color of your shirt; traditionally you want to wear a nice pinstripe, blue or white shirt. The tie is the area you can add a little personality into the mix. Even with that, it isn’t advised that you wear anything with a picture, in neon or with a bold print.
Ladies should also wear a suit if they have one. As with men, a conservative color is preferred, but red, royal blue and pinstripe are not that uncommon to see in the interview room. However, women have a little more wiggle room as it is also common (yet less formal) to wear a sweater and skirt or dress to an interview. If you are interviewing for a very conservative company or for a supervisor or higher level position, a suit is generally preferred. Nylons and a minimal amount of jewelry (4 total items from head to toe) is your best bet.
Regardless of what you wear, what you have to say needs to back it up. No one has been hired on interview clothing alone. Choose something that compliments you and doesn’t overwhelm you. Remember, you want them focused on you, not your outfit so choosing the appropriate dress for an interview is important.
