Conducting a government job search is similar to conducting a job search for the private sector in many ways. You search for a job, find one you like and apply for the position. It is also a very different process in many others. If you are interested in working for the government and you have never conducted this kind of job search before, there are a few things that you should be aware of.

1. Find the Job Postings. It generally takes more effort than one in the public sector. You first need to figure out which branch of the government (local, state, or federal) you want to conduct your job search in then find out where they have their jobs posted. Unfortunately, just like with the private sector, there isn’t one site that lists all of the jobs available.
2. Follow the Directions. Government openings tend to be a little bit trickier for most people to apply to. One of the primary reasons that most people aren’t contacted back is that they didn’t properly follow the directions. Often, you must not only submit your information online, but you also must sit for an exam or send your transcripts in via mail.
3. Be patient. The time from your submission to when you get contacted can vary greatly from sector to branch to position. In most cases, it takes longer than private sector and involves a lot more steps.

Conducting a government job search can be very time consuming, but very fulfilling. In the end you will be having the opportunity to work for a world super power, making an impact on the lives of your fellow citizens on a daily basis.
