The thought of an interview can be scary if you don’t understand your job interview strengths and weaknesses. But, knowing what you are good at and where you need to practice will help you know where to practice before the big day arrives.
An area that is both a job interview strength and weakness is knowing about your industry and your position. Most people have a good understanding of what they have been doing and how that relates to the overall success of an organization. However, on a whole, most people have a weakness in talking about themselves and their accomplishments. They often don’t take the credit they deserve and don’t “sell” themselves to a potential employer. Using hard data, such as a percentage or dollar amount, will not only show the interviewer you know what you are talking about buy show them the success you have had in your current role. An example of this would be “I increased sales in my territory by 20% last quarter.”
You may also not understand the body language you present during an interview. Both the tone of what you say and how your body responds can have an impact on your interview. An easy way to see what others see is to set up a video camera and tape a mock interview. Ideally, you should be looking at the interviewer(s) and you should be sitting with good posture and confidence. If you talk with your hands, just make sure they aren’t overwhelming you, also, make sure you don’t cross them as this makes you appear angry or bored. If you don’t have a video camera, sitting in front of a mirror and really watching yourself will work the same. You will feel silly and strange, but you will see how you truly appear to others.
The most important thing to understand is that even if you are nervous, so are the other candidates that are interviewing, and sometimes even the recruiters that are interviewing you. Everyone has their own job interview strengths and weaknesses and recruiting professionals understand that.
