- Have contact information at the top of the resume. It’s true - some people forget to put their phone number or email address on their resume. If you have a cell phone, include that. Also, make sure it is visually appealing. It shouldn’t be so large that it overpowers your resume or so small that you can barely read it.
- Make it look good. Again, having your resume formatted in a way that is appealing is the first step. Keep your margins close to the edges, but not so close that you lose the white space on a page. Ideally, you want your margins to be around .8-1″. The font is also very important on being readable for the recruiter. You should use a standard style of font such as Times New Roman or Ariel and shouldn’t have your font size smaller than 10 (11-12 preferred) or larger than a 14. The layout should make since - objective, experience, education. If you are a recent graduate of a BA or MBA program, you should move your education to the top.
- Sell yourself. Look beyond the job title and company name at what you accomplished while you were there. Did you increase sales? Reduce Turnover? Tell what you contributed to the organization while you were there. Any statistics you can use (20% decrease in turnover, etc) is even better.
While it may seem like very basic suggestions, they are often overlooked and key areas to focus on to make your resume have a positive impact on whoever is viewing it. It will allow you to shine and make sure you are using the best resume writing format for today’s job market.
